One of my favorite albums from the late 90's was Talib Kweli and Mos Def's
Blackstar, produced by Cincinnati's Hi-Tek. Most of Hi-Tek's work came out under Rawkus Records, so he's not the most well known of producers, though he did have a fairly successful single with Jonell,
Round and Round. I saw he had a new mixtape out and picked it up over the weekend.
Talib Kweli Presents - Best Of Hi-Tek (Cincinnati's Illest), mixed by
DJ Eque, has 27 tracks that he produced, from official releases to mixtape-only tracks. Here are a couple of songs from the tape:
Beanie Sigel -- Git That Doe
Talib Kweli and Snoop -- On My Way
Hi-Tek eventually left Rawkus after an argument over the lack of promotion his first solo album had received from the label. He released
Hi Teknology Volume 2 last month and is currently working as a producer for Aftermath. His beats are still dope, though I have to admit hearing G-Unit rap over his latest work seems like an abrupt change from his days with Blackstar.
You can pick up a copy of
The Best of Hi-Tek over at
MixUnit.
Other news:
Cam'ron disses Jay-Z (again). With Dipset member
Freaky Zeeky fresh out of jail, I'm sure its only a matter of hours before he releases his own track aimed at Jigga.
VH1 has video of a live Talib Kweli performance. You need the Viewpoint Media Player to watch the video itself, but you can hear the audio without installing it. (link via

Here is the alleged cover to Nas'
