In between writing up the Kingdom Come review and that second album review that never materialized (I'll be putting it up later today, check back for that), I went out and picked up a new Raekwon mixtape yesterday. Produced by Harlem's
DJ Thoro,
Heroin Only contains 25 new tracks from the Chef. With the current release date for
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 set for January, this will most likely be the last mixtape Raekwon will put out before the album.
After originally planning to have RZA handle the majority of the production duties on the sequel to OB4CL, Raekwon now says that
Dr. Dre will be producing many of the tracks. Along with Rza and Dre, the album will have production from J Dilla, DJ Scratch and Scram Jones. One of the strengths of the early Wu-Tang solo albums was that Rza was lacing them with some of the best beats in the business and gave each album a consistent theme throughout. Later solo albums from the Clan dropped off a bit when they started to get beats from other producers. While I think
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx 2 will end up being a decent album, the continually changing roster of producers almost guarantees it won't live up to the original.
When I picked up the mixtape, though, I was more interested in seeing how Raekwon's lyrical skills were holding up over 10 years after his solo debut. After a quick listen to this tape, it looks like Raekwon has stepped up his game, as he seems much more focused than he did on his previous two albums. Here are a couple of tracks from the mixtape:
Raekwon -- Going at the Face (Sittin' Sideways blend)
Raekwon and Doo Wop -- Castle 2 Castle
You can pick up DJ Thoro and Raekwon's
Heroin Only at
MixUnit.
Two other items worth taking a look at:
The Game is currently filling the role of guest celebrity photographer for playboy.com. To see the photos (obviously NSFW) and read an interview with The Game,
go to Playboy's site. From the interview, Game says, "[The best time of the day for sex is] right after your wife, girlfriend or fiancTe goes to work."
A Dipset X-Mas.
