After Phil Collins came with the realness on
his collaboration with Bone Thugs, it was only a matter of time before he was once again featured in a hip hop project. Created by
DJ Crazy Chris,
Phillmatic is a mashup album combining the work of Nas and Phil Collins (and Genesis).
After giving the album a listen, I have mixed feelings about this whole project. On the one hand, the mixing is fairly well done and the beats match up well with the vocals. The selection of Nas verses is also pretty good. On the other hand, I'm not a big fan of Phil Collins, so I was not feeling a good half of the tracks on the album. I suspect that I would have been more receptive to it if I was familiar with the Phil Collins songs that were used. Sadly, my knowledge of Phil doesn't extend much farther than
Sussudio.
Ultimately, this was an interesting enough concept with some good work on the production end, but it certainly doesn't measure up to The Grey Album or even the Premo/Nas mashup Prematic. Still, its a free download and for those who can't wait until Nas' album drops in November, this is a decent enough diversion.
I'm not going to put up any of the tracks from the album on my site, because these mashup albums have a tendency to draw the attention of record company lawyers with too much free time on their hands.

On a separate subject, big ups to Robbie over at unkut for getting his Salute To Weed Carriers published in
Modern Fix.
