While Danger Mouse is best known these days as the producer for the Gorillaz and for making history in the U.K. with Cee Lo, I don't think his most recent work compares to what he did with the mashed up Grey Album. So when I heard that someone had created a mashup album from some of Danger Mouse's own work, I had to check it out.

Gnarls Biggie, created by K.Ross and Elsewhere of Sound Advice, combines the beats from Gnarls Barkley's St. Elsewhere with acapellas from the Notorious One. Here is what the creators, Sound Advice, had to say about it:

"Gnarls Biggie is an independently released, infringement-laden remix project put together by the increasingly (g)notorious DJ unit, Sound Advice. The disc is filled with chopped Gnarls Barkley tracks, and layered with the timeless lyrics of New York's black Frank White, Biggie Smalls. Completed over the past few weeks, the disc has been repeatedly removed from MySpace, but that hasn't thwarted its creators. If anything it has made them work harder to share their creation with music lovers. Sit back, relax and give it a listen."

After giving it a listen, my initial impression is that it doesn't quite measure up to the Grey Album. A lot of that has to do with the source material that's being used; it would be hard for the music from any group, even one featuring Cee Lo, to measure up to the Beatles. Beyond that, mashing up hip hop vocals with Gnarls Barkley is just not as revolutionary an idea as using the White album.

Having said that, the work that Sound Advice has done here is pretty impressive. All of the songs are good enough to put in the iPod rotation, and Gone, Biggie, Gone (mashing Gone Daddy Gone with Kick in the Door) is more interesting than anything that appeared on Biggie Duets.

You can download the Gnarls Biggie tracks here.

Sound Advice also have a blog up that covers some of the other music that they've put out. Check it out.
