For those of you who have been listening to Hot 97 late at night the past few weeks, you may have heard of a new rapper named Daytona. I had never heard of him before, so I headed over to MySpace, the place to go when you are looking for unsigned rappers. Working with dj Cipha Sounds, Daytona seems to be promoting himself as a Bronx version of Kanye West. The first thing that gets mentioned in every article about him is his fashion sense and his arrogance, not unlike a certain Louis Vuitton Don. Beyond the clothes and attitude, Daytona is known for getting creative with his wordplay and the beats that he raps over. In his newest mixtape Happy Land Social Club (which I haven't seen for sale online yet, only on the street corner around the way), he raps over a mix of reggae dancehall beats, old school beats and Timbaland and Neptunes-produced beats. I'm not a big fan of his voice -- its a bit nasally for my tastes -- but I do appreciate that he's bringing something fresh to the rap game. Check out his remix of Sexy Back:

Hold on, what's that you said? You want to hear more about the Gillie da Kid beef? Really? Ok, ok. So yesterday Lil Wayne's girlfriend Trina dropped a track talking a whole lot of smack over Biggie's What's Beef beat. Ol' girl went after Khia, B.G. and Gillie. To Gillie:

Last I heard you ainÆt even from Philly
. . . Let the players handle this
Cause you just dissin for a deal IÆm dissin with the real

Not an overwhelming response, but I don't expect much out of Trina. My favorite part of the track is aimed at Khia. Khia, who you may remember as that sloppy looking girl rapping about "My Neck, My Back" a couple of years ago, has recently proclaimed herself Queen Of The South. Trina felt differently, and we are left with the hilarious line: "Beef is when a bitch titties looking like they sleep." That doesn't really make sense, but it still had me laughing.

Trina Diss Track

Some people think its a sign of weakness that Wayne has let Gillie run his mouth for the past couple of months without responding. I say if your girlfriend is willing and able, let her handle the response. It puts Gillie in a position where he has to respond to Trina (and its never a good look for a dude to be battling with a female MC) and he ends up getting a lot less exposure than if Wayne responded directly. And as much as Wayne has improved lyrically, I don't think he has a Takeover or Ether in him to completely dead the situation.
