Obie Trice and Nardwuar
With Eminem's upcoming mixtape shelved until October and Proof no longer with us, it looks like the best rapper in Detroit these days is Obie Trice. When I first heard him, I thought Obie was just a watered down version of Em. He tried to involve himself in every beef Marshall was in, putting out tracks aimed at Ja Rule and Benzino. The first couple of songs he released also tried to follow the model of Slim Shady, by using over-the-top metaphors and punchlines in his lyrics. It was a welcome break from the usual gun talk that you usually hear in rap, but I still wasn't sold on Obie.
My opinion of him changed one day when I was watching
Entourage (which happens to be the best show on TV right now). At the end of one of the episodes, Obie's
Wanna Know came on and it blew me away. After Three Six Mafia's Stay Fly, it was probably the best single that came out last year and most people have never even heard it. I don't usually like guitar samples in rap songs, but this one from William Jones' "It Couldn't Be Me" (misidentified by Obie in the song as "Van Halen"), is perfect.
After hearing that track, I went back and listened to Obie's
Cheers again. On second listen, he's a much better lyricist than I initially gave him credit for. With the Roots and Pharrell both receiving mixed reviews (at best) for their latest albums, and the Clipse album now pushed back to Halloween according to their myspace page, I am now looking to Obie's upcoming
Second Round's on Me to be the best album to come out this summer.
Here's a remix of Got Some Teeth, off of his Cheers album, over a Cypress Hill beat:

Obie's second album is coming out
August 15th. If you don't already have it, I recommend picking up his first album,
Cheers.
Switching gears for a second, if 3 bucks is just too much for your budget and you absolutely have to have a Big Mac, check out
