Shout out to our boy
Crazy Legs Conti who is competing in the 4th of July Nathan's International Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island today. Looks like its going to take at least 50 hot dogs to win this thing, so good luck with that.
For
today, my goal was to find a track that embodied the whole patriotic vibe of the holiday. My first thought was to go with the Petey Pablo
U.S. Flag remix of "Raise Up." The remix was a little too corny for its own good, though. I couldn't find the mixtape it was on, anyway, so I passed on that.
Then I remembered that Hammer had put out a
patriotic rap album soon after 9/11. Since I had Monday off, I went over to Best Buy to pick it up (let it never be said I don't put some work into this blog). As I perused the "Rap" aisle of their cd section, debating whether to look under "M" for MC Hammer or just "H" for Hammer, sales rep Curt asked what I was looking for. I wish I had a picture of his facial expression after I said I was looking for Hammer's post-9/11 cd "Active Duty." Left nearly speechless, Curt called over another sales rep to discuss the matter. They informed me that they did not have any of Hammer's cds in stock, but gave me the option of pre-ordering a copy of his next release (you know, just in case it sells out on the first day it goes on sale). I suspect they were trying to clown me with that offer.
I considered telling them that I was doing research for my blog, but I figured that excuse would sound just as bad as the request for a Hammer cd anyway. So instead I attempted to save face by asking for a copy of Raekwon's "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx." They both gave me the head nod of respect, acknowledging that I had regained some street cred, though I'm sure they both laughed at me after I left. Ultimately, my trip to Best Buy did not yield any patriotic mp3s for today's 4th of July post, but at least I have a new copy of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx four years after my old roommate jacked it from me.
So keeping with the Wu-theme, here's a track of the band El Michels Affair doing an interpretation of a Wu-Tang classic:
C.R.E.A.M., dollar dollar bill y'all.
Apparently, they're working with the Wu to put together a full album of tracks like this. You can buy the vinyl, featuring the CREAM track and Glaciers of Ice,
here.
To all our American readers (and anyone else who managed to get the day off), Happy 4th of July! Shout out to MaineTaine and everyone else in the armed forces.
Bonus video of the day:
Air Up There, from the And 1 Mixtape tour, does a 720 degree dunk.
