As I continued my search to find the future "great" rappers, one name I kept coming across was Garcia. Coming out of Miami, a lot of people are saying this Cuban rapper is going to be one of the next Southern rap acts to blow up. He started out at 14, writing diss raps aimed at Kriss Kross back in the day, and has since put out a couple of indie releases. If you saw MTV's My Block: Miami, you might have seen him for a second if you didn't blink.
In the past, I have not been feeling many of the rappers to come out of Florida. Trick Daddy has an occasional hot single (and he luv da kids) but his full length albums are usually disappointing. Luther Campbell, one of Garcia's mentors, put out that booty bass music for the clubs under 2 Live Crew, but it was nothing that would blow you away lyrically. Trina is just a watered down version of Lil' Kim, and Pitbull might be alright, but the combination of Lil Jon and reggaeton beats was too much for me to put up with.
To be honest, I also have not been feeling most of the Latino rappers that have come out. Big Pun was great, or at least his first album was, Cypress Hill was great before they decided to become the hip hop version of the Grateful Dead, and I'm always checking for whatever the Beatnuts put out. Other than that, though, I haven't been into Latin rap, especially the stuff that gets put out under indie labels. I think the biggest problem for me is the fact that a lot of the raps use a mix of English and Spanish. A lot of weak rappers flip lyrics in Spanish to hide their lack of skills. That, and again the prevelance of reggaeton beats, has turned me off much of it.
That being said, I picked up the Garcia mixtape Hood Music and grabbed a bunch of his other tracks from his website and gave it a listen. A lot of his fans are saying that, lyrically, he is on the next level. I'm not quite sure I would take it that far, but he is solid on the mic and can certainly compete with anyone else that's coming out of Florida. Check it out and let me know what you think:
