See, we do show some love to the South...
I'm going to put to rest (at least for this week..) the discussion on Southern rap today by putting up a track from a Southern rapper that I actually do like, Lil' Wayne. When I first heard him, right after Juvenile's
Ha started getting a little play, I can't say I really liked him. His voice sounded like it was put through a vocoder and he was pretty liberal with the concept of rapping along with the beat.
When he put out the mixtapes for The Carter 1 & 2, my opinion of him changed. Some have accused him of biting Jay-Z's style on these mixtapes (and on
The Carter 2 commercial release), and to be honest that's probably a reason I like him now. I wouldn't say he lives up to his own claim of "the best rapper alive since the best rapper retired," but he's certainly improved.
A short story about Wayne: when he was younger, he accidentally shot himself in the chest. When the police asked him where the gun came from, he dropped a dime on his stepfather who ended up doing 6 months time for that. Upon his return from jail, he was murdered and Cash Money's Baby became Wayne's surrogate father. Things have gotten better for Wayne, though, as he is now president and CEO of Cash Money Records and is currently attending the University of Houston.
Here is the "sequel" to the Purple Ribbon AllStar's classic
Kryptonite. This one has Killer Mike picking up from where he left off on the original Kryptonite, with Lil Wayne finishing up the track:
Download Kryptonite 2 (mp3)
