I've mentioned before that Biggie's
Duets album was a disappointment to me. While there were a couple of decent tracks on there, in the end it really just seemed like one final attempt by Puffy to milk BIG's legacy (released just in time for Christmas!). The production was alright, but the rappers that appear on the tracks with BIG seem to have been picked at random from various geographic regions ("Let's grab a couple rappers from Houston, that's hot right now...a couple from Atlanta...and don't forget the Metal crowd, get Korn!"). At least on
Born Again the guest appearances made sense. Most of the rappers on that album had just started their careers right before BIG died, so there was at least some connection with Biggie, and it gave Biggie's weed carriers, Junior MAFIA, one last chance to get some shine.
On
Duets, however, you have Nelly, T.I., and Korn. Biggie wasn't above rapping with weak rappers (Bone Thugs), or doing pop songs to increase his appeal (One More Chance remix), but there's no way he would share the mic with Korn.
So today I'm putting up a "duet" with Biggie that actually makes some sense. This is a remix of
Runnin, featuring 2Pac. The remix was done by DJ Snoyl, out of Boston. The beat is from 50 Cent's
Bad News, from his pre-Aftermath album
Guess Who's Back?. Its an interesting choice for a beat for a remix of a song featuring Pac and Biggie -- on 50 Cent's version, the chorus is "I don't Like You, You Don't Like Me, So Why Pretend?"
