Through an email exchange with someone who hit me up on myspace, its recently come to my attention that there are hip hop fans out there that have never heard of the movie Wild Style, so I'm about to put you up on it. Its an old movie (came out in 1982), so its a little rough around the edges if you're seeing it for the first time in 2006, but definitely worth checking out if you're interested in the origins of hip hop. It features a ton of the pioneers of rap: Grand Master Flash, Fab 5 Freddy, Busy Bee, Cold Crush and Grand Master Theodore.

For a full breakdown of the movie, check out WildStyleTheMovie.com.

The one thing that does still hold up well is the soundtrack, which has some of the first vinyl scratches ever recorded. I'm putting up a track from the companion album to that soundtrack, The Original Wild Style breakbeats album. As far as I can tell, the breakbeat album is no longer available.

Download Wild Style Theme (mp3).

That breakbeat has been used in a lot of rap songs, but you're most likely to remember it from the intro on Nas' Illmatic.
