As most of you reading this are probably already aware, producer
J Dilla (a.k.a. Jay Dee) passed away last week from a kidney ailment. Jay started as part of the production team for A Tribe Called Quest, moving on to Slum Village and also putting out solo instrumental albums and a collabo with MadLib. Dilla never got the mainstream attention that the Neptunes or Timbaland received, but he was an icon among the backpack/underground scene. His beats tended to be a little more traditional than most hip hop that you hear on MTV these days, relying heavily on sampled drums and breakbeats.
Soul-sides has put up 5 of Jay's songs on their site. My favorite is
Fuck The Police (mp3). The flute in the background is crazy and the sentiment behind the song is one I can't really argue with.

Perhaps most tragic about his death is that he just released a new album two days earlier,
Donuts. I've only heard snippets of it so far, but everything I've heard has been very good. I definitely recommend picking it up.
