Unless you've been completely avoiding MTV and any radio station that plays anything vaguely resembling hip hop, you have undoubtedly been exposed to the emerging Snap music. A few different groups are laying claim to being the originators of snap (including Dem Franchise Boys) but by far the most popular song in this genre has been D4L's
Laffy Taffy.
Snap music is similar to crunk, except the tempo is a little slower and the snare drums are usually replaced by finger snapping. A lot of the blogs out on the internet are hyping this up as the next big thing in hip hop music, but I have to say I really don't think this is going to be the case. The beats are barely more complex than what you could pump out on a cheap casio or by messing around with
Fruityloops for a few minutes and the lyrics of these songs are just as shallow as the beats.
Remember back in the early 90's when the 69 Boys, 95 South and Tag Team were putting out a bunch of songs that were blowing up on the radio? No one these days will admit to liking those songs, and I think that will be the case with snap music a few years from now.
For the few of you out there that haven't heard it yet, I'm putting up D4L's Laffy Taffy. The version I'm putting up is a remix done by DJ Meltdown, which uses a slightly more complex beat than the original.
