This past month, My Man Shafe grabbed a beat from Philly producer Arckatron, loaded it up with references to everyone from Tom Chambers to JWill and Randy Moss to Kevin Durant and put together a great tribute to the NBA (as it turned out, October was a great month for NBA rap tributes in general with Zilla Rocca releasing an Allen Iverson track of his own). The idea was originally to drop it on the NBA's opening night, but then Hurricane Sandy came through and postponed our planned tipoff. A lot has happened in the basketball world since then - OKC decided they'd rather save a few (million) luxury tax dollars than guarantee themselves a decade's worth of Finals appearances, Carmelo Anthony seems to have discovered the concept of team defense, and Magic Johnson continues to have the title of "Worst NBA 'Analyst'" on lock - but tonight we're finally unveiling the track, My J. As a bonus, I sat down Shafe - one of the few residents of South Philly unashamed of being a Knicks fan, I suspect - for a quick, very informal, interview and got him to talk about a bunch of bball-related topics, the most notable being his top draft pick among The Wrecking Crew members as a potential teammate:
I know you're a Knicks fan, so who's your favorite Knick of all time?
Fave Knick Bernard King although Pat Ewing was a close second. My cousin loved Barkley, I was Pat Ewing and that era all day, Starks, Oak. Mason! Rugged.
Worse moment as a Knicks fan: The Reggie Miller 3's game at the Garden, the Charles Smith blocked layup game against the Bulls, or the Jeff Van Gundy/Alonzo Mourning leg grab?
While the leg grab was embarrassing, worst moment is easily the Isiah regime... painful.
Better point guard: Jeremy Lin or Raymond Felton?
I'll take a healthy in shape Felton over Lin, however I would've kept Lin and not even brought Felton on board, but still get Kidd to mentor Lin.
Favorite non-Knick player?
Fave non knick all time is Shaq, in the league now Ray Allen, Dirk [Nowitzki].
Least favorite player in the league?
Least fave easily Dwight Howard. Heartless, gutless.
Better NBA emcee: Shaq or Iverson?
Shaq crushes all athlete rappers, and a good number of current professional mc's. "Skillz" was my shit.
In a hypothetical 2 on 2 game, who are you picking: Castro, Zilla or Has?
Ha! We've talked about this. I would take Zilla cause he's in the best shape of those three, though Castro swears he can play.
Did you play ball in high school?
I was football and baseball player in my day. Power bat, power arm.
What court in Philly do you play at?
I play at 15th and Morris St. It's a small spot but alotta talented players.
If somebody were to describe your own game, who would they compare you to?
You just gotta listen to [My J], "When i pull up my quick release lookin like Ray (Allen)" lol mike miller no back spasm lol.
Prediction for the Knicks record at the end of the year?
Knicks started hot and Melo's playing angry which I love. 49 wins.
Favorite pair of bball kicks?
I'm a Jordan head all day. 3's, 4's, 11's, 13's.
