Given the low rate of posts at this site over the past couple of months, you would be forgiven for thinking last week's hiatus was an entirely voluntary decision on my part. However a week without power or internet, while trying to stretch a quarter tank of gas as far as a v8 engine will allow as the Garden State morphs into a less scenic version of Road Warrior, left little opportunity to keep things updated. Power has finally been restored, gas lines are down to a suddenly tolerable hour long wait, and I can now start catching up on everything I missed last week (chief among them being Zilla's latest release, Party With Villains).
In the meantime I wanted to post a few mixes that helped get me through the dark days of the past week during the rare moments when my 3G connection was actually operating, thanks to a user named Mayacu Skunk who's been posting up a ton of great old mixes over on mixcloud. I've spent the past week listening to hours of the stuff he's posted up, and if you're into pre-millenial hip hop you'll be doing yourself a favor if you check his page out. Here's one of the best mixes he's put up:
And if that isn't enough golden era hip hop, here's a mix of East Coast boom bap that I put together a while ago. The scratches are off beat, the sound mixing is questionable, and the beat matching is shaky, but the song selection is impeccable with cuts from Real Live, OC, Black Moon, Biggie, OC, East Flatbush Project, and more. Check it out:
