TheeSatisfaction - Pause

Whether it's due to some latent jealousy on my part stemming from the fact that I've never been able to take time off from work to attend, or whether it's the smug mentality among some attendees that seems to have been amplified tenfold ever since music bloggers discovered Twitter during their hajj to Austin, TX, I've done my best to avoid the annual hype that builds around SXSW. Despite my efforts to dodge coverage of the event this year, I did catch NY Mag's recent SXSW roundup, and their highlight of a pair of female emcees from Seattle grabbed my attention.

Going by the name TheeSatisfaction, the duo are best known up to this point for their appearance on Shabazz Palaces' Swerve and, more recently, by Shabazz Palaces' appearance on their own single Enchantruss. Visually, the pair make for an interesting combo; as you can see in the above video, they seem to be taking style cues from the Ladies First video and a 90's baby's interpretation of what people actually wore during the late 80's. Musically, TheeSatisfaction are harder to categorize, offering up a mish mash of throwback hip hop, spoken word and soul, with lyrics that seem to espouse a commitment to some form of afrocentric lesbianism (as opposed to, say, the shock value lesbianism of Azealia Banks). It's nothing I've ever really come across in hip hop before, but what I have heard up to this point has been quite good.

Here's a live performance of one of their singles, the somewhat provocative Bisexual:

TheeSatisfaction - Bisexual

Say what you want about the song itself, but that beat is dope. You can grab an mp3 of the song over at Supersound Records.

TheeSatisfaction's next album, awE naturalE, is duo out on 3/27 from sub pop! records.
