About ten years ago, I remember hearing a lot of talk about this girl Narubi Selah out of Trenton who had received a cosign from Lauryn Hill during one of Hill's rare appearances outside of the Marley compound. She went on tour with fellow Trentonites Poor Righteous Teachers, made a couple of appearances on Def Poetry Jam, and seemed to be well on her way to stardom within the world of Spoken Word. I'm not sure what all happened to her in between then and now, but she promptly fell off the grid and several years went by before I heard anything further from her until her apparent reemergence as an emcee on the above clip from MTV's Sucka Free Sunday.
Now based in Brooklyn, it seems Selah hasn't lost much of her lyrical edge, as she clearly stands out in a cypher that includes 13 year old phenom NeNe Ali and Queens emcee Creature. Selah put out an album last year, I Am Living Math, which slipped under the radar of most reviewers and bloggers. Of the sites that did take notice, the reviews were quite favorable. Here's a video for one of the songs from the album; it's raw, but her lyrical talent is undeniable:
