Curly Castro - They Call Me Castro
I realize it's a bit of a pipe dream to expect mainstream rap fans to embrace political, intelligent rap the way that they did back when a group like Public Enemy was capable of seeing platinum sales of their records, but with the rise of the Occupy movement perhaps there's a chance that the increase in activism will have some impact on the type of music that people expect from artists. If not, well, at least it was enough to inspire Three Dollar Pistoleer
Curly Castro to spit a few thought provoking rhymes over a beat from
Blueprint. Keep an eye out for Castro's album,
Fidel, due out (early?) next year.
Speaking of thought provoking political rap, I meant to put up this Kendrick Lamar video last spring when it first came out. Now with over a million views, it's likely you've already seen it a few times so you'll have to give me a late pass on this one. The fact that
J.Cole had a hand in this song almost (
almost) makes up for the bubble gum rap he's been putting out. In any event, Castro's song had me thinking of this one so here you go:
Kendrick Lamar - HiiiPower
Okay, now that those two videos have hopefully put you in an activist frame of mind
go read this article. It has nothing to do with music, but it's important that you read it and understand what's going on in Washington these days.
