I've remarked on more than one occasion that the Chicago-based duo State Champs has a decidedly Native Tongues vibe to their music, so I wasn't entirely surprised to find that the debut album Renovations from one of their affiliates, fellow Windy City residents The Whoevers, had a similar sound to it. The group and the album are both clearly influenced by the hip hop of the early to mid 90's, both in the modernized boom bap beats to the lyrics, which feature homages to groups like Tribe, Wu-Tang and Mobb Deep. I had never heard of The Whoevers before, and had no expectations for the album when I first grabbed a copy after a recommendation from the Champs' Nick Arcade, but Renovations turned out to be one of the few full albums to come out this year that was entirely listenable from start to finish.
