Zilla Rocca - Black Cherry (alternate youtube link if vimeo link doesn't work for you)

As the final step before the release of his upcoming Nights & Weekends EP, due out on September 20th, Zilla Rocca put out the above video last week for the single Black Cherry. Using footage from the classic 80's flick After Hours, it's a great sample of what will be on the album. There are so many different flavors of music on the EP, though - everything from house party rap to Cuban inspired big band era mambo rap - that it's hard for any one single to encapsulate everything that you'll be hearing once it finally drops.

The video was produced by 5846 Films, and though your boy doesn't get an official credit in the video itself, I'm going to go ahead and give myself the title of honorary executive producer for this one.

In addition to prepping for the release of his own EP, Zilla also recently handled the production duties on a remix for The Rubix Qube Exclusive, a duo consisting of fellow Philadelphians Rick Fridrich and Emcee Unless (devoted readers may recall Unless from Curly Castro's You And Whose Army...and after revisiting that earlier post, I now notice a glaring grammatical error in the artwork that I put together for that single. See if you can spot it!)

ZR describes the beat that he put together for the remix thusly: "It's one of my favorite beats that I've ever made; Q-Tip-like drums and ghostly samples that still knock in the car." And if you like the Ashes beat, be sure to cop Mr. Rocca's earlier collection of instrumentals, Big Stupid Bangers.

You can hear the original version of Ashes on The Rubix Qube's recent album Preface.
