Last week, an emcee/producer out of Mississippi named Jae Maque started bombing my facebook page with links to music that he and his crew 3rd Infantry had been putting out. My regional bias would normally have caused me to skip right past it, but for whatever reason I gave the songs a thorough listen and I was rewarded with material that was quite a bit different from what I expected to hear given its origin. With a voice like Scarface and a stack of sample-heavy beats that sounded like they had been plucked from some unreleased late 90's era east coast album, Jae Maque had this to say about his musical style:
I'm from a place where the only thing that is real musically, is the BLUES. That's why we (3rd Infantry) sound so heartful, so soulful, so much more as what we like to call it down here, "southern country fried". Where producers like Kanye West, 9th Wonder, Just Blaze, etc, have to search for it, we grew up in it. Born & raised in the mud, played as a child in the cotton fields of Mississippi, grew up hunting & fishing in the south. As far as I could remember, I've always loved this HIP HOP shit, the style, the sound, the way of life.
Here's another beat that Jae Maque produced:
