Has-Lo - Fiber Optics (Live at Fat Beats)

Details on the free cd of Has-Lo's In Case I Don't Make It that we're giving away are at the end of this post.

Picking up where we left off from yesterday, I've got some footage that I took of Has-Lo's performance at the Fat Beats Pop-Up Store in Brooklyn from this past Saturday.

Before heading into the store, I got a chance to kick it in the parking lot with Has-Lo, Zilla Rocca and My Man Shafe. After debating whether Max B or Lil B was the better rapper - a debate that can't really be resolved with any kind of satisfactory answer, though Zilla made the best case by actually spitting a Max B verse - we headed into the converted warehouse and waited for Has to take the stage. The Fat Beats store itself didn't have quite the same vibe as the old Manhattan store; it's in a large warehouse and, as is the nature of a "pop-up" store, the setup was fairly sparse. Shafe brought back a little bit of that old Fat Beats vibe, though, by rolling up a Phil in-store and cracking open a brown bagged bottle of St. Ides.

Has showed up to the event with a flash drive of unlabeled beats, and asked Zilla at the last minute to handle duties as impromptu hypeman and macbook dj. So the playlist for his set was determined on the fly, and you'll notice in the videos some back and forth between Has-Lo and Zilla as they try to figure out which instrumental to play. But Has-Lo is as chill in real life as he sounds in his verses, so at no point did he seem the least bit stressed about it. He ran through a couple of songs from his new album, In Case I Don't Make It, handled a special request from Zilla, and even dropped a freestyle off the top of his head. Whereas most of the other performances of the day had a bit of a manic energy to them - as dope as their set was, the Brown Bag AllStars were so hyped up that only hard core fans could've kept up with all of their rhymes - Has was real smooth with his delivery which helped emphasize his lyrical abilities. Given the relatively small audience, it ended up being a really good showcase of what he brings to the table as an emcee.

Has-Lo - Untitled #1 (Hold On) (Live at Fat Beats)

I shot the videos of Has' performance with my phone, so the quality isn't perfect but it gives you a sense of what the show was like. My man Jorge Garcia in the front row blocked a little bit of the view, unfortunately, but the vibe didn't seem right for me to bumrush the stage to get a better angle.

Has-Lo - djbooth.net freestyle (Live at Fat Beats)

The above clip was my favorite moment from the show, with Has spitting the verse that he recorded for djbooth.net after Zilla requested it. Has-Lo clearly didn't expect the request, and it's likely he hadn't spit that verse since it was posted on djbooth, but he caught up pretty quickly.

And finally, as I mentioned I have a free copy of Has-Lo's In Case I Don't Make It to give away. I copped an extra copy of the cd while I was at Fat Beats, with the intention to get Has to sign it and then give it away on the site. Unfortunately things got a little hectic right before I bounced from the store, so I forgot to get him to actually sign it before I left. But the cd is so dope you won't even mind. If you want the cd, all you have to do is send me an email (deefresh AT gmail DOT com) with "Has-Lo" in the subject line, hit me up on facebook or shout me out on Twitter. I'll pick a winner at random and send it out by the end of the week.
