These days, the only time you'll hear Nice & Smooth on the radio or in the club is when Fatman Scoop or DJ Kool samples one of Greg Nice's hooks on their songs. Back in the early 90's, though, Nice & Smooth (Greg Nice and Smooth Bee) was one of the best rap groups around.
They've released
several albums, though they are probably best known for appearing on Gangstarr's
DWYCK and their own single,
Sometimes I Rhyme Slow, which sampled Tracy Chapman's
Fast Car.
Its hard to expose younger hip hop fans to Nice & Smooth because their lyrics are nowhere near as hard as the stuff that you'll hear on the radio today. They didn't rap about selling drugs or anything violent, it was almost strictly party rhymes. When Smooth Bee actually did rhyme about his "Nine Millimeter," he was only using it to kill in the
Shakespearian sense of the word (about time we got Shakespeare up in this blog, right?). Give their stuff a few minutes, though, and you'll appreciate how good it is.
The other day, I picked up a copy of DJ Aristocat's
A World Of My Own, his newest album. On it, there is a mix of Nice & Smooth's
Hip Hop Junkies with the beat of the Gorillaz
Dirty Harry. Listening to it was the inspiration for this post. So go download the song. Even though the beat is from 2005, it still fits in with the vibe of Nice & Smooth.

Buy the full album,
A World Of My Own from

Go out and cop a Nice & Smooth album, too! Their best album is
Ain't a Damn Thing Changed. 11 good songs on that one.
