As announced last month, Minnesota emcee Mally has begun his Free on the 15th series, a promotion in which he will be putting out a new single every month until the release of his next EP in April 2011. With production from The Sundance Kid, this second entry in the series finds Mally at his best. Forgoing the synthetic beat and emo rap combo package that other independent rappers seem to be trending towards these days, Malik comes correct over a beat built around a dope soul sample. I feel like I'm starting to repeat myself, but this kid's flow is damn near flawless. Peep:

While we're on the subject of great Minnesota rappers, there's some talk going around twitter and facebook today that Eyedea - a rapper who, I image, has had some degree of influence over Mally's development as an artist - passed away last night. The closest thing to an official confirmation I could find was a note on his fb page purportedly written by his mother announcing a memorial fund in his name. I was never a huge fan of his recorded music, but as a battle mc his performances were amazing. If it turns out to be true (and I'm sure they'll be more details tomorrow either way), R.I.P to a true legend.
