I don't venture too far from traditional hip hop, but occasionally I get recommendations of music from other genres that strike a chord with me. Usually, as with the above song from Electric Wire Hustle, the point of interest for me is a sample that's been used in rap. In this case, EWH have flipped Minnie Riperton's Inside My Love (which, I'm told, was quite controversial back in the day due to the line, "Will you come inside me?") for their song Perception. The beat for Perception has, to my ears, a decidedly Dillaesque sound to it, and that is undoubtedly due to the use of the Riperton sample, which was a favorite of Dilla's. The first rap song to use the sample that I'm aware of, however, was Intelligent Hoodlum's Street Life:
Later that year, A Tribe Called Quest used the same sample for Lyrics To Go. Presumably this is where Dilla, who later worked with Tribe, found inspiration to use the sample:
