Marley Marl aka NYC Cutter - DJ Cuttin'

In case you missed it, this past week unkut.com's been running a series of posts on legendary producer Marley Marl. I highly recommend grabbing all of the Marley remixes that Robbie put up as part of the series.

Unkut's posts inspired my co-worker and o.g. hip hop aficionado Mikey to dig through the youtube crates for the above track, Marley Marl's first ever single. Recorded under a name that sounded like a serial killer, NYC Cutter, Marley put this single out under Pop Art Records, a small label in Philly that released a lot of Steady B and Roxanne Shante's early material from 1985 - 1988. Marley hooked up with Pop Art after handling the production duties for Roxanne's classic UTFO diss, Roxanne's Revenge, the label's biggest release. The public response to DJ Cuttin' apparently was not too good, however, so he dropped the NYC Cutter pseudonym in favor of Marley Marl for his follow up release in 1988, In Control, Vol. 1.

And no disrespect to unkut's readership, who elected LL Cool J's Still Jinglin' version of Jinglin' Baby as Marley Marl's best remix (which is a classic, no doubt), the real winner clearly should have been King Tee's At Your Own Risk. It's easily the greatest combination of East Coast production and West Coast lyricism. Peep:
