I've been tempted to go on a rant about the various evils of BP and its actions in regards to the Gulf Coast oil spill. Gross negligence in preventing the leak, actively preventing scientists from accurately measuring the leak, putting more effort into hiding the oil from public view than from actually removing the oil, and offering up empty promises to pay for the cost of clean up; take your pick, there's more than enough material to rant on for days when it comes to the criminal actions of British Petroleum. There are enough sites to go to for a better analysis of the situation, though, so I'll save my words for another time.

Yet, with the damage done to our waters likely to last well beyond my own lifetime, it seemed like some sort of tribute was necessary. So what follows is a few of my favorite hip hop songs focusing on water, as an acknowledgment of what's been lost. Pour out a little liquor h2o for the Gulf Coast.

Unfortunately, I still don't have my laptop up and running so I was forced to rely on youtube to put together a proper mix. For those interested in just the audio, here's an alternate link on mixtube.

Playlist:
Mos Def - New World Water
De La Soul - Tread Water
Brother Ali - Rain Water
DJ Krush - Into the Water
LA the Darkman featuring Raekwon - Spring Water
Fela Kuti - Water Get No Enemy
J-Zone - Holy Water
Time Machine - Water In Your Cereal
Raekwon - Ice Water
De La Soul - Trouble in the Water (Aspeqt Remix)
Chino XL - Water
Kooley High - Water

Update: Apparently EMI does not allow videos to be embedded outside of youtube, so Mos Def's New World Water was removed from the playlist.
