Kalae All Day Feat. Homeboy Sandman - O.G.LYRIKALBOOKBAGGER
Back in March, my boy Mike told me about a female rapper he saw performing up at a tattoo parlor in NYC. Mike is the prototypical hipster: tight pants, a lifetime subscription to Pitchfork, and an unwavering devotion to his fixie. Not the type of kid I'd normally be looking to for musical recommendations, but he swore to me that this chick was worth my time.
It took a little bit of effort to track her down - Mike initially described her as looking like "Beyonce," which was entirely inaccurate and had me searching for unsigned R&B divas - but eventually I discovered that her name is Kalae All Day. Hailing from New York, she is easily the most interesting female emcee I've come across in several years. In the course of any given song on her album, AFROMATIKNEOHIPPIEROCK * SOLEMUZIK, Kalae will transition from traditional hip hop to neo soul to spoken word. There are more than a few similarities to be found between her and a young Erykah Badu, and while she's not quite at Badu's level yet, the potential is certainly there.
I've had a few brief email exchanges with Kalae and, if all goes well (never guaranteed), she may be collaborating with another group that's been featured on this site in the past. If anything comes of it, I will be sure to post an update. In the meantime, here's one more song from Kalae's debut:
