Palm ad featuring Mos Def

As far as I'm concerned, the best hip hop video out right now isn't actually a music video, it's a commercial (though I suppose the line is often blurred between those two categories). Using Mos Def's Quiet Dog Bite Hard as the musical backdrop, the commercial is intended to showcase a new product from Palm. However, the star of the commercial most certainly isn't whatever Palm's trying to sell; in fact, it wasn't until I had seen the ad a few times before I was even able to discern exactly what was being sold (an O/S for a phone). Rather, the star is clearly the dimepiece in the red dress bouncing down Grand Street to the best song of off The Ecstatic.

As I'm always on the lookout for potential wifey material, I did a little bit of research - which is to say that I typed "girl from mos def commercial" into google - to see what else she had been in. Her name is Michelle Van Der Water and, according to her resume, she's an expert in Shaolin Kung Fu! I think I might be in love.

She's done a couple of real hip hop videos in the past, including Outkast's Prototype, in which she played "an unsuspecting photographer visited by aliens who plant their seed on Earth." Peep:

Perhaps more memorably, she danced around in a rather revealing bikini for the video to the Ying Yang Twins' godawful Whisper Song:
