Let it never be said that the 5 O'Clock Shadowboxers don't listen to requests from the fans. Less than a week after jb put in a request for another collaboration between Zilla Rocca and Alex Ludovico, the Shadowboxers' new EP Broken Clocks has arrived and it features a guest appearance from the pride of Gary, Indiana, the former Ill Eagle. Ludovico appears on Nex Millen's remix of Eric Lindros, one of the standout tracks from the first Shadowboxers album. Peep:
Unlike other follow-ups to proper albums, the Broken Clocks EP isn't a dumping ground for all the crap we couldn't fit on The Slow Twilight, nor is it a butterfly net to scoop up all the odds and ends that might've slipped through the digital cracks since last year. Some tracks will look very familiar but sounds have been added, subtracted, and sequenced painfully to give the EP a cohesive feel, a tough order considering we have five, count 'em, FIVE producers of the 9 tracks compiled.
Perhaps the best cut on the EP is It's always 5 O'Clock Somewhere, an anthem for the committed alcoholics in the crowd. The song finds Zilla shouting out all of his favorite potent potables over a tremendous beat from Douglas Martin that makes use of Fela Kuti, J Dilla and The Five Stages of Drinking. Check it out:
For those of you who have been hit hard by the recession, or if you just don't feel like supporting good, independent hip hop, you can download the EP for free over here.
