Remember back in 1999, when
the Lox were trying to get out of their contract with Bad Boy, and everyone was rocking those "Let the Lox Go" t-shirts? The Lox eventually got out of their contract, and signed with Interscope.
However, I was just listening to Hot 97 (NY radio station) and the Lox were on Angie Martinez' show. Apparently the contract situation is still messed up 6 years later. According to Jadakiss (who may have been exaggerating a bit), Puffy gets 50% off of all their publishing, and the contract says that 50% is
for life.
That's some Suge Knight /
Jerry Heller type ish right there. I know a lot of these rappers are struggling just to get by when they sign their first contracts, but that should be rule #1 for all aspiring artists: Never sign a contract that has the words "for life" in it.
Jada said that, due to the contract situation, he was not planning on putting any more albums out. Instead, Jada is going to focus on managing the artists on his D Block label (specifically Jae Hood), where Puffy can't get a cut of the profits.
According to
this article, 50 Cent has also been causing problems for the Lox at Interscope. The Lox didn't mention anything about Fiddy while I was listening, though. Eventually Jermaine Dupri called into the show, and offered to sign them to So So Def. Seemed more of a promotional stunt just for JD to get his name out there. Can't really see Styles P and Kris Kross doing any records together.
