Though British Jazz/rap group Us3 tends to get dismissed as a one hit wonder band built around a gimmick, on the rare occasion that they even come up in conversation these days, I've always thought they deserved more credit than that. If you're able to name one song from Us3, it's undoubtedly Cantaloop, their brief crossover into mainstream success. That song, unfortunately, overshadowed the rest of their debut album Hand on the Torch, which was built around some of the best Jazz samples ever used in hip hop, all taken from the Blue Note Records catalog. For undergroud heads, it's also worth noting that at one point the group counted Shabaam Sahdeeq (see: Caught Up In a Struggle) as a member.
In any event it's been several years since I had heard any new music from the group. They apparently put out two records back in 2007, though I must confess to having missed them. The song in the above video, The Love of My Life, is off of their latest album stop.think.run. It's interesting that the album primarily features two New York emcees, Sene and Brook Yung, yet it's only available overseas.
Since EMI Music in their infinite wisdom have decided not to allow the embedding of Cantaloop, here's the source record for the sample that song is built around, Herbie Hancock's Cantaloupe Island:
