A few months ago one of the writers for The Colorado Rap Report (a blog you should really add to your daily reading) put me up on a producer from around his way, Kid Hum, who had just released an instrumental album, Fossil Fuel. Though I never got around to putting it up on the site, Fossil Fuel, built around a rather eclectic selection of samples that seemed to have been strongly influenced by Donuts, was a fairly impressive introduction to Hum's skills as a producer. As with a lot of underground instrumentals, however, I thought the album would have benefited from getting someone to actually rap over the beats.
Apparently I wasn't the only one who wanted to hear some rhymes to go along with the beats, as Kid Hum and Khal from Rock the Dub rounded up a bunch of emcees to drop verses over Hum's instrumentals and collected them all into one LP, Offshore Drilling. With a handful of familiar names on the tracklisting - Cyrano, Braille and Pugs Atomz - I had to give the album a look. A couple of songs fell flat, but overall OD is a solid listen for any fan of underground rap. Here are two of my favorite cuts from the album:
Kid Hum and Cyrano - Audubon
Kid Hum and Sunkenstate - Gingivitis
You can download the full album for free over at House of Waxx. Also, be sure to check out Fossil Fuel as well.
