I know that, having fallen into a bit of a routine over the past couple of months, the start of last week seemed like it was missing something, as it was the first Monday in a long time that we were not blessed with a new pair of songs from Nico the Beast. Nico had a pretty good excuse for missing last week, however, as he was coming off of a performance with Sean Price the previous Friday and was preparing for a show at the Knitting Factory this past Thursday. Nico, one of the hardest working emcees you'll ever encounter, still managed to put in some overtime work and recently knocked out two weeks' worth of tracks.
Today I'm putting up Week 8's entries and then tomorrow I'll put up Week 9. That will leave us with just one more entry in the Feed the Beast series, so savor these while you can.
On the first track, Nico spits a verse over Dead Prez's Hip Hop (featuring the greatest bassline, ever):
As with most weeks, the beat for the second track took me a minute to recognize. Perhaps not coincidentally, I find that my ability to identify instrumentals is inversely proportional to how much sleep I get during the weekend. But anyway, it's from Fat Joe's Thank God for That White. Compare the original with Nico's, and I think you'll agree that the Beast from Philly outperforms the Elephant in the Room:
I know we've picked up a few new readers after the links from okayplayer and rawkus this past week, so just to get the rest of you up to speed: Feed the Beast is the ongoing promotion for Nico the Beast's debut album No Beast So Fierce. Nico takes beat submissions from the fans and then proceeds to tear them apart with original verses. You can find links to all of the previous weeks over here (on the right side of the page). Stop by Nico's MySpace page to vote on which freestyle you liked best, the top vote getters will be featured on an upcoming mixtape.
To buy Nico's album, or just to preview all of the songs, head on over to cdbaby. It's dope, it's $13.00, go get it!

That Fat Joe beat is dope. Or like heroin and crack smoke to quote nico. are the rest of the beats on joe's album that good? i wasn't checking for it when it first came out but nicos freestyle here has me curious.
The rest of that fat joe album was not worth the 12 bucks...or 10 minutes to d/l or whatever...
Hey nico if you're reading this. Have you ever done any battle raps, like Fight Klub?

Yeah I feel you on that. Some of these lines you spit could definitely be flipped into a nice battle rhyme if ever needed which is why i asked. And speaking of wayne. wouldn't it be dope if any rapper who referred to themselves as the Greatest Rapper Alive in one of their rhymes had to defend their title in a battle like fight club? Put that on pay per view and have don king promote it...that would sell even better than his album.

No doubt!! Would be worth it to watch too.

Put the rematch of Eli Porter vs. Envy on the undercard, and I'd sign up for that.
And Nico, not to get sentimental already, but it's not going to be the same around here after next week.

Fresh, it's cool. I'll still come by from time to time like it's my old high school or some shit...lol... but, real talk, all these feed the beasts joints and other exlusive freestyles will be available for free download. Courtesy of us fine gentleman at Beat Garden Ent.

The NJ emcees you're referring to are MAGr and Viro, right? Or are you guys working with someone new, too? Can we get some love for North Jersey emcees? And can I manage to write a sentence without a question mark?
