Boston College's gNotes:

Though I've never bothered to contribute to the seemingly endless requests for donations from my alma mater, Boston College, or do much of anything to support B.C. beyond tuning in to the occasional football or basketball game, I still feel some level of attachment to the school. So when I was contacted by Canyon Cody, the founder of Boston-based Gnawledge Records and fellow B.C. alum, I felt duty-bound to listen to the music that he had sent me. Good thing, as the music turned out to be quite good. Cody passed along a promo for Rhymes and Beats, an album featuring one of the artists on his label, gNotes, a rapper/producer who also graduated from Boston College just a couple of years after I did.

Originally hailing from Washington state, gNotes started out playing acoustic guitar, finding inspiration from the post-Nirvana music scene in nearby Seattle. His Northwest roots are evident throughout the album, from the underlying political message in his lyrics (not unlike Seattle's Blue Scholars) to the beats, often built around guitar samples, that he produces. gNotes is a change of pace from the usual style of rap that I put up on this site, but give the music a chance, there's some dope songs to be heard from him.

Here are two tracks from gNotes:

gNotes - Muddy Treble Clef

gNotes feat. Scroll and DJ Special Blend - Belly of the Beast

After finishing up a series of tour dates with Devin the Dude, gNotes is set to release his latest album, Rhymes and Beats, on October 9th. Head on over to the Gnawledge Records' website to preview (and order) the rest of the album.

good stuff...I'd like to see Boston get some more run in the national Hip Hop scene.

BC is top 10 in football now, right?

They're currently ranked 7th, I think. Now we just need a repeat of last Saturday (with all of those Top 10s losing) and B.C. might actually crack the top 5.
