On my way home from work today, I picked up a new mixtape from Remy Ma, Shesus Khryst, solely for the mindblowing, wildly inappropriate artwork on the cover. I was all set to make some sort of Mel Gibson reference, which would have had you all ROFLing your heads off I'm sure, but it seems I'm about a month too late for that. Apparently my local bootlegger hasn't stayed on top of his mixtape grind, as this tape has been out for over a month now. It even comes up in google as the first result for "worst mixtape covers." The mix of religion, sex, violence and punnery is a bad enough look as it is, but perhaps its greatest offense is the fact that the concept's not even original.
I'll tell you what, though: If I'm going to drop five bucks on a mixtape, you better believe that I'm going to use something from it in a post. Here are two of the better (and I use "better" here in the loosest sense of the word) tracks from the tape:
While we're on the subject of mixtapes, did anyone else notice that mixunit.com is selling mixtapes again? It's good to see that they've regrouped for the post-Drama era, but who do they expect to pay upwards of $16 for a bunch of tracks that weren't good enough to make the album cut?
I would have been excited to hear KRS-1 get on a track with OGC and Black Moon back in '96 or so. But KRS in 2007? I don't know, I think I would have expected Koch to sign him... but I'll definitely check for whatever they end up putting out (or if they put anything out).
As for Remy, I stopped checking for her the first time I heard her bite that Jay-Z line ("Started Relaxin/Now that's what I call a chain reaction"). Jay's been known to bite a few lines himself, but he never made a lyric worse by reusing it.
