Mally Eulogizes Minnesota's Studio Gangsters (3 Part Eulogy):
(Image: Mally - 3 Part Eulogy)
As I said when I first put up that Run Minnesota song from the MN Boyz, I thought it was dope but I was caught a little off guard by the fact that a bunch of dudes that no one had heard of (with the possible exception of St Paul Slim) were claiming to have the entire state on lock. The underground hip hop scene in the North Star state is thriving, and if you make the claim that "this is my state," you best believe you're going to have a bunch of emcees calling you out on it eventually. I mention that because, given my posting of this new song from Mally so soon after that MN Boyz post, you might think this is some sort of response to the song. It's not, though a whole lot of rapping d boys are about to get their cards pulled nonetheless:

Mally - 3 Part Eulogy (produced by Rem') (d/l link)

I asked Mally about the motivation behind this song, and he said it wasn't a shot at any of the MN Boyz specifically. His lyrical rounds were aimed at a much larger target, rather, as Mal told me, "[it's] a universal shot at cats who dont even have cd's, myspace pages, or some sort of name and say they run shit...how? But I just wanted to make something cats bang in they whip and get some lyrics behind it too." Mission accomplished, as this turned out to be yet another banger from the best unsigned rapper in Minnesota.

As with every song I put up from Mal, the lyrics are far more interesting than anything I could write about them so I'll use this as an opportunity to plug a few things for the man. First, Mally's been nominated in two categories for the Twin Cities Hip Hop Awards: Album of the Year and Best New Artist ("Next Up"). You don't have to be from Minnesota to vote (and you don't have to vote in all of the categories), so head over to thetchiphopawards.com and show Mally some love!

And for those of you who do happen to find yourselves up north this December, Mally will be doing the following shows this month:
